Your Dream Home: The Process

Designing a custom home can be an exciting and rewarding process, but it can also be overwhelming. Understanding the process and what to expect can help make the experience less stressful and more enjoyable.

The process of designing a custom home typically starts with a consultation with an architect or builder. During this initial meeting, you'll discuss your vision and needs, as well as the budget and timeline for your project.

Once you’ve selected your architect and design team they can proceed with schematic design and site analysis. Based on the information gathered in the initial consultation and site analysis, the architect will create preliminary design concepts for your custom home. This can include things like floor plans, elevations, and renderings. You will have the opportunity to review these concepts and provide feedback.

Once the design concepts have been refined and approved, the architect will create detailed drawings and specifications for the custom home. This may include floor plans, elevations, and sections, as well as details for features such as doors, windows, and finishes. These drawings will be used by a structural engineer to develop the structural set for the home. If a builder has already been selected, these drawings can be used for an updated budget as well.

Once the design concept is finalized, the architect will prepare construction drawings, which will include detailed plans and specifications for the construction of your custom home. These drawings will be used by the contractor to price the project and construct your home.

When the construction drawings are finalized, the next step is to obtain permits. Your architect will submit the plans to the local building department for review and approval. This can take some time, so it's important to factor this into your timeline.

Once permits are obtained, construction can begin. During the construction phase, your architect will work with the contractor work through any questions that arise during the process.
